CHAPTER 10

“Iwish Greyson could set up a portal in the Moreau building,” I grumbled as we ascended the stairs to the council chambers.

“That’s against the rules,” Eve explained. “Not to mention having an open-ended portal you need to have a ley line juncture. Ignore anything Caton and Lucinda say. They’re self-important assholes that can’t stand being upstaged.”

I pushed open the massive double doors and noted how the inside smelled like herbs and cloying perfume. I bet Lucinda hadn’t left for the past forty-eight hours. The witch in question stood there with her arms crossed over her chest, glaring at me as we walked down the aisle.

To my surprise, Greyson was there and stepped forward to embrace Faith. “Niagara Falls, right?”

She nodded her head, and he kissed the top of it before approaching the computer and activating the portal. It shimmered with the familiar dance of colors as we prepared to step through to Niagara Falls. Just as we were about to cross, though, Caton and Lucinda, the dynamic duo of annoyance, blocked our way.

“Going on another field trip, ladies?” Caton smirked, his gaze lingering a little too long on Eve.

I rolled my eyes. “No, Caton, we were just planning a cozy little picnic in Paris. We figured today was a good day too, you know, fight some Milens and save the day. The usual. We’ve planned tacos afterward. Want to come?”

Lucinda growled at me. “This portal isn’t your personal gateway, you know.”

I shot her a look. “Trust me, if it were, we’d be teleporting to a beach in Bali, not chasing every power-hungry Tom, Dick, and Harry. Now, excuse us.”

I cut that argument off and stepped into the portal. Although it was brief, it was filled with eye rolls and scoffs. It was a relief to leave Lucinda’s bullshit for the pounding majesty of Niagara Falls.

We materialized behind a nondescript building. The air vibrated with the distant roar of cascading water. The smell of damp earth and the distant scent of fried dough hinted at the nearby tourist attractions. We were in the mundane world, and it felt both foreign and nostalgic. It was difficult to remember what life was like then.

We were standing in an alley, the kind you’d expect to find in a mid-sized city. A large green dumpster loomed nearby, accompanied by a chorus of disgruntled pigeons.

Eve checked her phone, frowning. “According to the map, we’re not far from the falls.”

I gestured dramatically to our lackluster surroundings. “So much for the glamor of supernatural adventures, huh?”

We wandered out onto the main street, the noise of the falls growing louder with each step. The faded facades of nearby businesses seemed almost quaint against the looming power of nature ahead. It drew us and everyone else to it like a magnet. It was impossible to ignore a sight like this. It had been on my bucket list of places to visit. I just wish it’d been under different circumstances.

As we neared our destination, the ground trembled beneath us, the vibrations from the falls resonating through every step.
